During the past scholastic year the Department of Technology in Education within the Ministry of Education has received a grant from the European Social Fund (ESF) Project Number 3, partly used to train teaching staff in ICT and its relevant application in the curriculum and provide certification schemes.

So far, 287 teachers from state and non-state schools received 75 hours of ECDL training, out of which 244 obtained the full ECDL certificate.

The ESF funds covered ECDL notes for all seven modules, course notes and exercises on CD, the seven ECDL exams, ECDL tuition and the overall organisation.

During this scholastic year another 25 support teachers will be trained to develop authoring software skills and create interactive websites more efficiently. These teachers will subsequently be able to transfer knowledge to other teachers in schools.

This training will induce teachers to develop environmental and educational software items that will subsequently be made available to all other teachers and students through the Internet.

The ESF project included also the procurement of two computer labs consisting of 44 computers, two colour laser printers and two interactive whiteboards.

The department's aims are to improve ICT skills of all teachers in all educational sectors which will result in a pedagogical development due to the use of ICT as a tool in the classroom.
