Teachers’ union opens trade dispute with government over Junior College talks

Government 'delaying negotiations', not responding to financial proposal - MUT

The Malta Union of Teachers (MUT) has opened a trade dispute with the government, accusing it of “delaying negotiations” and not responding to a financial proposal made months ago amid negotiations on a new collective agreement for Junior College lecturers.

In a brief statement Thursday, the union said it had “declared a trade dispute with the government” during negotiations for a new collective agreement after the last expired in December 2023.

“After almost two years from the start of negotiations, the government has not yet provided a reaction to the financial proposal tabled by the MUT in early summer”, it said.

“The delaying of negotiations and the failure to provide financial reactions despite promising them for several months are unacceptable to the union”, it said.

The union added it was planning on meeting junior college lecturers “to update them about the situation, following which it shall order industrial actions”, without providing further details.
