A teenage girl has died after falling off a balcony late on Tuesday, police said. 

Neighbours told Times of Malta they heard screams when the incident happened at Tigné, Sliema, at about 9pm. 

The 15-year-old girl, an Italian who lives in San Gwann, fell a height of four storeys. She was given first aid but was pronounced dead at the scene.

One woman, who lives in the residential block where it happened, said: "We heard the screaming. It is a terrible tragedy."

Police said that initial indications suggest it was an accident. Magistrate Audrey Demicoli is holding an inquiry.  

On Wednesday morning, a single bouquet of flowers and candles where placed next to a poster reading 'RIP'.
