A 12-year-old girl was killed when two cars collided head-on in the Għajn Dwieli tunnel.

The accident happened at about 9.15pm last night.

Rescuers from the Civil Protection Department were called to free the girl from the wreckage of one of the cars.

The police said the accident happened when two cars, one driven by a 46-year-old man from Senglea, the other by a 20-year-old man, also from Senglea, collided.

The 20-year-old, who also suffered grievous injuries, had three passengers, the 12-year-old girl, a 17-year-old girl from Cospicua, and a 17-year-old man.

The girl, Alashia Azzopardi, succumbed to her injuries this morning, the police said.

The other people involved were slightly injured.

The police are investigating.

In a post on Facebook, Partit Demokratiku deputy leader Anthony Buttigieg appealed to the authorities to take measures to make this stretch of road safer. He said 34 years ago he was lucky to escape with his life following another bad accident in the same tunnel.
