Temperature hits 42.3°C but heatwave set to ease from Wednesday
Monday's temperature fell just one degree short of the July record
The temperature reached 42.3°C on Monday, one degree below the July record set two days earlier, according to the Meteorological Office.
Saturday’s maximum of 43.3°C was the highest July temperature recorded in Malta, surpassing the previous monthly record of 42.7°C set in 2023.
The latest reading means Malta has experienced two days above 42°C during the same spell of extreme heat.
Saturday’s record was also just half a degree below Malta’s all-time high of 43.8°C, recorded in August 1999.
Temperatures are expected to remain exceptionally high on Tuesday, when the maximum is forecast to reach around 40°C, with the overnight minimum hovering at a sweltering 29°C.
Breezier conditions
The heat should begin to ease gradually from Wednesday, with a forecast high of 39°C, before dropping to around 36°C on Thursday and Friday.
Hazy sunshine is expected during the first half of the week, while breezier and windier conditions are forecast from Thursday onwards.
Despite the slight decline, temperatures will remain high enough to pose a risk of dehydration and heat-related illness, particularly for people spending extended periods outdoors.
Health authorities have urged the public to avoid unnecessary exposure to the sun, drink plenty of water and keep a close eye on elderly and vulnerable people.
Cooling centres have also been activated in several localities for vulnerable people who may not have adequate cooling facilities at home.
The public has been advised to limit alcohol consumption because it can worsen dehydration and to check regularly on people with dementia, who may be less aware that they are overheating or need to drink water.
