Wanderers end Greens Championship Pool hopes

Sliema Wanderers scored their third win in a row after outplaying traditional rivals 3-0 at the Hibs Stadium.

The result ended Floriana’s hopes of reaching the top six and confirmed Tarxien Rainbows as the sixth and final team to play in the Championship Pool this season.

It was Sliema who took the lead on 11 minutes when Ryan Fenech’s powerful drive flew past a helpless Bernard Paris, the Floriana goalkeeper.

Sliema’s hopes were dented on half-hour when Pedrinho was dismissed for a second bookable offence.

But despite their numerical advantage Floriana failed to profit and it was Sliema who sealed the points on 66 minutes when Mintoff was floored in the area by Julian Briffa and a penalty was awarded. Lucian Dronca made no mistake from the spot.

Jean Pierre Mifsud Triganza added a third goal in stoppage time when he was picked by the steaming Mintoff and the Sliema forward fired the ball past Paris.

Floriana ended the match with ten men when Pablo Doffo was shown a straight red card for a rash challenge on Mintoff.

Sliema’s Ryan Fenech was named BOV Player of the Match.
