The group of players from the Gordon Asciak Tennis School, sponsored by Eurosport, returned to Malta from Palermo recently with some very encouraging results.
Although the Italian players won more matches, the Maltese managed to claim five of the seven events.
Simon Camilleri, Matthew Asciak, Elaine Genovese, Steffie Sullivan and Zac Muscat all won against top Sicilian players with Asciak maintaining an unbeaten run. His best result was against Italy's no.4 - 6-1 6-2.
Muscat also had a fine win after beating Sicily's top player 9-2. Muscat had lost to the same opponent last April and from this result one can see the vast improvement of this promising player.
Sullivan was also involved in an interesting match against a member of the Italian U-14 national team. She lost 7-6 6-7 1-6, also confirming that this player has improved considerably.
Richard Pugliesevich, who was making the trip for the first time, won the trophy for best effort.
The Gordon Asciak Tennis School caters for all levels of play. It gives a chance to those who would like to play abroad. Such trips are ideal as players are matched against those of the same standard and can enjoy playing with confidence.
The Tennis Club Palermo will be visiting Malta at the end of October where the Maltese hope to turn the result around.
