'You are terrifying my family,' Rababah says as sister's car is 'slashed'
'They are not only attacking me, but they are also turning on my family now,' says Labour candidate
Labour election candidate Omar Rababah has called for cool heads in the final days of the electoral campaign after a tyre on his sister's car was slashed as she picked up her son from school.
Rababah's candidature has faced racist comments, even among Labour Party supporters, because he is Muslim.
"They are not only attacking me, but they are also turning on my family now," he said in Facebook posts.
He urged those responsible to stop.
"Politics should never descend to this level. You are terrifying my family, when they have nothing to do with this," he said.
"We may disagree, criticise each other, but we should never lose respect and our humanity," he said.
"If you don't like me, skip me (on the ballot paper). If you like me, vote for me, and that's it. We do not need to escalate matters in this way."
