Dr John Fisher, head of the Education Department of the Transport and General Workers Union (TGWU) of the UK, was a guest lecturer in the Faculty of Education, where he taught "Adult Education and Work" as part of the coursework for the Master's in Education (M.Ed.) degree with specialisation in Adult Education. In his lectures Dr Fisher focused on workers' education with specific reference to trade union education.
Dr Fisher's visit was sponsored by the General Workers Union. Five GWU officials attended the course in addition to the eight persons enrolled in the M.Ed. Adult Education programme, a Ph.D. candidate in Adult Education and an exchange student from the University of Waikato in New Zealand. This allowed for a healthy exchange between educators, pursuing the Master's degree course, and practitioners in the trade union field.
Dr Fisher has a wealth of experience in workers' education and adult education in general, having previously held an academic appointment in the Department of Education Studies at the University of Surrey, a department well known throughout Europe for its strong adult education programme. He has been to Malta on previous occasions, as guest of the GWU, to carry out short courses and workshops for trade union personnel.
