‘Thank you’ – Robert Abela tells party faithful at Mile End

Sense of togetherness needs to continue, prime minister says

The Labour Party’s historic electoral win was a victory for all Maltese and Gozitans, Robert Abela told chanting supporters outside party headquarters on Sunday.

He gave his speech from the balcony of Labour HQ, joined by the party’s top brass and flanked by his wife and daughter. His first words: “Thank you, thank you, thank you!”

He said the Labour Party had made history by winning four consecutive general elections. “That’s all thanks to you,” he said as supporters started chanting his name.

Abela said the victory was a win for everyone because the Labour Party’s manifesto “was written by Maltese and Gozitans together”.

“The ‘Int Malta’ manifesto was the product of months of work with you. Now that you’ve given us such a strong mandate, it’s time to implement it together.”

Abela said Labour ran a positive campaign that focused on national unity. “That sense of togetherness needs to continue: pride in the Maltese identity and what makes us Maltese and Gozitan.”

Abela said work would start from Monday to implement the various pledges made during the campaign. “Let’s roll up our sleeves, work hard with a sense of unity to continue making a better Malta for all. You’re Malta.”

He urged the supporters to gather for a mass meeting on the granaries on Sunday and to meet again at the Palace Square at 11am on Monday for his swearing in.
