The last general election, in 2003, was dominated by the EU membership issue. The Nationalist Party won another mandate to govern with 51.79 percent of the vote, a 12,080 vote margin over the Labour Party.
A total of 285,122 votes were cast, almost 96 percent of the total eligible voters. One percent of the votes (2,909) were invalid.
The PN won 146,172 votes, the MLP, 134,092, AD 1,929 and independent candidates 38.
The Nationalist Party won four seats on the 10th district, three each in the first, seventh, eighth, ninth, 11th, 12th and 13th districts and two each in the second, third , fourth, fifth and sixth districts.
The MLP won three seats in the second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth districts, two in the first, seventh, eighth, ninth, 11th, 12th and 13th districts and one seat in the 10th.
