Watch: 'The beginning of a new chapter': Alex Borg strikes a hopeful tone
Borg vowed to 'continue working to be a stronger alternative for the country'
PN leader Alex Borg said the election result marks “the beginning of a new chapter” after Labour secured a fourth term in Saturday’s election.
The PN conceded defeat on Sunday morning, saying Labour had won the election with a slashed margin of 18,000 votes. Labour won the 2022 election with a majority of over 39,000 votes.
In a recorded message posted to social media, Borg said he had called the prime minister to concede defeat and congratulate him.
“Despite our political differences, Malta remains bigger than us all,” he said.
“I know that for many, this is a disappointing day. But you should never regret believing in hope”.
Borg struck a hopeful tone, saying this election campaign saw people who had lost faith in politics once again return.
“Change always begins from people who dare to dream of a better country,” he said.
Borg said that “although this is not the result we wished for, the message is strong. There are thousands who want a different type of politics”.
He said the spirit shown throughout the campaign marked the “start of a new chapter”.
“The journey does not end today, it continues with more determination, work and love for Malta,” Borg said.
“We will continue working to be a stronger alternative for the country.”
Later he appeared at the Naxxar counting hall, where he embraced party supporters and candidates, including Adrian Delia and Mark Anthony Sammut.
