How refreshing it was to read Alex Welsh’s letter What It Takes To Make Marriage Last A Lifetime (October 27).

Written with conviction and from experience, he highlighted the values we grew up with. These are values which have been steadily undermined so that, today, what is right is often depicted as outdated and what is wrong as desirable.

“Marriage is a three-way contract, a promise between a man and a woman and God. Breaking a promise with God must be a sin.”

What value are we placing on our given word? Does it no longer count? A promise is a promise, for better, for worse, in sickness or in health, until death. It cannot be “un-promised”.

We were raised to keep a promise. Hopefully, we are continuing to raise our children in this way. How then can it be right to renege on this important commitment?
