The Genghis Khan Prize for showing a disregard for freedom goes to a Maltese candidate who said that "the national interest must come before human rights in tackling irregular immigration".

The prize is shared with Mr Nicolas Sarkozy, French minister for the Interior, a presidential hopeful, who spoke more than his mind when he referred to some of his fellow citizens as "scum".

Paris is still burning. What Hitler failed to do, Sarkozy nearly succeeded in doing. Welcome to the end of ideology! "Left" and "Right" seem to speak in one voice these days. We really do not know what's happening.
