The Italian In The Piazza is the theme of this year's Week of Italian Language in the World, which, since 2001, has been the main event organised by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the promotion of the Italian language.

A spokesman for the promoters said that The Italian In The Piazza is an issue of great symbolic value, identifying the piazza as the real and ideal space in which to celebrate the history of the national and regional identities. The piazza is seen as an architectural space and, at the same time, the scene of all aspects of daily life and a catalyst of the political, social, cultural and artistic activity of the community.

As part of the week of activities, which will include conferences, seminars, films and presentations at the Italian Cultural Institute in Valletta, members of the Italian national team of flag wavers will be giving three performances: in St Paul's Square, Mdina tomorrow at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., in Republic Street and St George's Square, Valletta on Saturday at 11.30 a.m. and in Independence Square, Victoria on Sunday. The performances, which are open to the public free of charge, were made possible thanks to the support of the Malta Tourism Authority, Farsons, Go Mobile and Agenda Books.
