MEP Caroline Jackson said (April 20) that the reason Malta has not got environmental improvement funding is that its EU membership application had been put in deep freeze for two years.

She contradicted herself.

First Ms Jackson said that Malta did not get EU funding because of the deep freeze, meaning that Malta would have got funds before joining the EU. Then later she said: "Once Malta becomes a member, the EU will be able to allocate money which should help in Malta`s major infrastructural and environmental projects," later repeating the same point.

So according to Ms Jackson the funds would come when Malta joins the EU. Then it stands to reason that the funds were not coming our way because we were not yet members - the freezing had nothing to do with it.

From the way the chairman of the parliament`s committee on the environment spoke at the interview, it is quite clear that her agenda was a one-way track: That of portraying the EU as being a heaven on earth, and to tell us that the other way is `utter darkness`.

Perhaps for herself personally the EU is a real heaven.

We had many diplomats and officers from the EU visit us and speak in favour of the EU but all of them emphasised that it was for the Maltese to choose which way to follow.

Not the remarkable Caroline Jackson.
