Almost one year ago (February 25, 2004) I wrote in The Times to complain about the disastrous state of the roads in Madliena. Shortly after, a few roads were hastily patched up in order to keep the residents' mouth shut before the forthcoming fresh council elections last May.
After these elections I allowed the newly elected Swieqi councillors, which included a new mayor, some time to settle in after which I made an appointment with the new mayor in order to explain to him the problems which the residents of the Madliena hamlet faced, especially the bad state of Madliena's roads.
I was assured by the mayor that things would move into action as soon as the new Madliena hamlet committee was formed. Well, would you believe it, we are now in the beginning of February and we still do not have a new Madliena hamlet committee.
Furthermore, the roads are now in an even worst state than they were one year ago. St Catherine Road, which leads from Madliena to Naxxar and which was not even patched up last year, is in an unbelievably bad state.
I urge the Swieqi mayor to wake up to his responsibilities and advise him to take measures so that those councillors who do not have enough time to tackle all Swieqi residents' needs should be made to resign and make way for others with more enthusiasm and time on their hands.
