What role does the European Parliament have in the EU?

The European Parliament shares the role of legislator jointly with the Council of Ministers. This means that the Parliament and the Council together enact laws under a number of areas.

In some other areas, the European Parliament has political control and should also be consulted. All these areas are listed in the EU constitution. The Parliament also elects the President of the Commission.
