I am shocked that nobody has written in to complain about the discourtesy shown by the management of the Manoel Theatre on the night of the performance of Gounod's Romeo and Juliet.
One would have expected an announcement at the beginning of the opera offering apologies for the change of programme while at the same time thanking the soprano and tenor who stepped in at the last minute to save the situation.
Visitors from abroad were left leafing through the programme to find an explanation but none was there. The local audience, many of whom got free seats courtesy of Bank of Valletta, knew about the change of programme from reading the local papers but none of the visitors I spoke to who had booked via e-mail from Germany knew about the events leading up to the performance.
When are we going to stop being so parochial and rude?
