The rise in fuel prices has left people feeling they turned over a New Year with an added setback. Nikki Abela Mercieca speaks to motorists refilling their car at petrol stations to get their feedback on the increased costs.

Jacqueline Borg, 44, of San Ġwann

The price is always going up. When I spend €10 worth of fuel, it’s like I’m putting nothing in the tank. I’m not using my car much now to economise; at least I try to anyway. I have no idea how much the increase will cost me overall but, as I said, €10 does not get me very far.

Dylan Dimech, 24, of Naxxar

There’s not much we can do about the price increase other than pay up. I work at the open-air market so it affects me but there isn’t much I can do as I always need the van to work. I don’t know how much it will cost me in the long run. What I know is that, whereas before I used to fill the tank for some €40 it now costs about €6 more.

Frans Mifsud, 42, of Qormi

I go to work but have to fork out more money. The fuel increase, at least, doesn’t affect me so much as I use the company van for work. There isn’t much I can do to compensate; it’s more the boss that it really affects.

Ivan and May La Ferla, both 66, of Sliema

The fuel increase is too much when the cost of living adjustment is taken into account. This was too little for us to cope with the rise in fuel and gas. It is very difficult for us to get by as we are pensioners and the added €1 per week we have been given is not enough to cover the rise in prices.

Rose Gatt, 33, of St Julians

I don’t agree with the increase in price. It will have a ripple effect. If you have a business, you will have to increase prices to compensate. Our family business, which we took over from our father, will probably have to increase prices, whether we like it or not, as fuel is used for a lot of things, even for transport vans, for example.

Tony Zammit, 52, of Attard

The price increase is not controlled. It’s done hastily and rises nearly every month. It definitely affects me. Our income is always shrinking and the costs are always rising.
