A Hungarian man who fled his country as he was about to start a four-year jail sentence for theft has been arrested in Malta.

The police said the arrest was made on Wednesday morning on the strength of a European Arrest Warrant.

The man escaped custody following his trial, as he was about to start his jail term. He is due to be taken to court to undergo extradition proceedings.
