Thief found hiding under a truck after stealing from cars

He was hanging under the axle

A man who was found hanging under a truck after attempting to steal from several cars at Transport Malta’s compound in Pembroke admitted to theft on Wednesday.

Matthew Zammit, 39 of Pembroke, was accused of attempted theft from cars in the compound last month and earlier this month. He was also charged with recidivism and committing a crime during the operative period of a suspended sentence.

Police inspector James Turner said the police were alerted after car break-ins at Transport Malta’s compound.

Police officers then found the accused hiding under a truck in the compound, hanging from its axle.

Zammit pleaded guilty and was placed under a three-year probation order. The operative period of a suspended sentence handed in separate proceedings was extended by two years and a two-year treatment order was imposed.

"This is not a punishment but an opportunity to turn your life around. This is your time to change your ways so as not to appear in court any more," Magistrate Leonard Caruana told the accused.

AG lawyer Marcea Fenech prosecuted, assisted by police inspectors James Turner and Kelsey Bugeja. Lawyers Arthur Azzopardi and Jacob Magri assisted the accused.
