A thief who robbed a Ta' Xbiex store using a fake pistol got him comeuppance within seconds on Friday, walking straight into the arms of police officers as he fled the scene.

Police were alerted to the theft at around 3.30pm and rushed to the shop on Triq il-Principessa Margerita. They arrived just as the thief, a 34-year-old Gżira man, was leaving, and arrested him on the spot.

The man, whose face was concealed, is alleged to have ordered an 18-year-old cashier from Pieta' to hand over all the money in the till while threatening her with a fake gun.

Police investigations are ongoing.
