Tomorrow evening the foundation set up to honour the memory of entrepreneur Tumas Fenech, the Fondazzjon Tumas Fenech ghall-Edukazzjoni fil-Gurnalizmu (FTFEG), marks its third anniversary with a ceremony at the Portomaso Suite of the Hilton.

Lino Spiteri, a columnist of The Sunday Times, and a trustee of the foundation, will be presenting a paper, "Malta, ghidt?" (Malta, you said?). A second paper on freedom of expression will be presented by influential Asian journalist Ayaz Amir, who hails from Pakistan.

Mr Amir, who arrives on a five-day visit today, is the top correspondent of the biggest English language newspaper in Pakistan, Dawn. His visit was sponsored by the Tumas Group, Hilton Malta and Emirates airline.

Certificates will also be given out to all those who attended courses organised by the foundation last year.

Addressing a news conference at the Hilton last Monday, President Emeritus Ugo Mifsud Bonnici, who heads the foundation with Mr Spiteri, Tony DeBono, Ray Sladden, Malcolm J. Naudi and Joe A. Vella as trustees, with Mario Schiavone as administrator and Carmel Bonello as chairman of the Board of Studies, launched Volume I of the Maltese Journalism Review.

Dr Mifsud Bonnici said the review contained the proceedings of the first Journalism Convention, held in 1999, organised by The Malta Press Club. Over a hundred people had attended courses organised by the foundation, with both local and foreign lecturers addressing them.

The foundation had played its part in the setting up of the MA in Journalism, sponsored by The Strickland Foundation at the University of Malta and had co-operated with a number of local and foreign institutions to hold its many courses.
