Thomas Farrell, first mayor of Żabbar, dies aged 89
Funeral of former teacher and sports journalist to be held on Thursday
Thomas Edward Farrell, a former educator who served as the first elected mayor of Żabbar, has died aged 89.
Farell was a teacher by profession and later worked as an education officer.
He contested the first local council elections in 1994 as an independent candidate and became Żabbar’s first-ever mayor. Farrell served in that post for one year.
Farrell also played a key role in developing sports journalism in Malta, serving as a founding member of the Sports Writers Association in December 1970. The association evolved into the Malta Sports Journalists Association in 2004.
Farrell, who died on January 6, is survived by his wife Maria, his three children Mariella, Salvino and Martin, their families, and friends.
His funeral will be held at Our Lady of Graces Sanctuary Żabbar on Thursday at 8.30am.
Żabbar’s current mayor, Jorge Grech, was among the many to offer condolences to Farrell’s family.
