Transport Malta worker captures 'terrifying' moment waves surround car
Official says he feared for his life as waves battered Marsascala promenade during Storm Harry
A Transport Malta employee captured the "terrifying" moment waves surrounded his car on Marsascala’s promenade on Tuesday morning, as Storm Harry’s gale-force winds wreaked havoc on the seaside town.
Throughout Tuesday morning, public officials and emergency services braved the lashing winds to clear roads from debris and restore order.
A video sent to Times of Malta by a Transport Malta official shows the perilous conditions some officials faced.
In the video, the audibly distressed man is stranded in his car as waves surround it on the flooded street.
Fishing boats docked in the harbour can be seen rocking wildly in the background, as the water approaches.
The video was shot at 8.20am, the man told Times of Malta, when winds were at their strongest.
“The water was rising and falling like a tide,” the official said, describing the “terrifying” scene.
“For a minute, I thought this was the end of the road for me. I thought I was going to be carried out to sea,” he said.
The man said he had been in Marsascala since 5.30am, when he, along with other colleagues, was called in to attend to a stopped bus.
The officials were trying to close the road, one of the areas worst-hit by Storm Harry so far, when their vehicles were engulfed by waves carried on to the promenade.
Other videos taken by Times of Malta photographers throughout Tuesday morning capture the scale of damage in Marsascala, with debris littering the town’s streets and storefronts smashed by winds which reached over 100 kilometres per hour at times.
