Three men are under arrest after a shootout in Magħtab late on Wednesday.

The shooting came following an argument between residents and another man at about 10.30pm in Triq Santa Klara.

A man close to the scene said he heard about five shots ring out in the dead of night.

The police said officers who arrived on the scene found a driveway gate smashed.

Police said preliminary investigations showed that a 41-year-old from Qormi allegedly rammed the gate, disembarked and started shooting at a house. Two men and three women were inside the residence.

However, sources later said that it appears that shots were fired by one individual "from the residence outwards".

No one was injured.

The police launched a search for the man and his Mercedes, but he turned himself in at Qormi police station at about 2.30am.

He alleged that shots were fired at him by the two men at the residence. His Mercedes was found on the Coast Road, bearing bullet holes.  The weapon was later also found.

"It is clear that the men in question know each other," the sources said.

Duty magistrate Joe Mifsud ordered an inquiry. Police are investigating.
