Two men and a boy were yesterday charged with trying to kill three brothers by assaulting them with a cutting instrument and a knuckleduster at St Luke's Hospital on Monday.
Brothers Charles and Louis Vella, 26 and 25, and a 15-year-old boy, whose name cannot be published because he is a minor, pleaded not guilty to the attempted murder of Richard, Robert and Bettega Cuschieri, seriously injuring Richard Cuschieri and slightly injuring the other two brothers at the hospital canteen at about 5.45 p.m.
They also pleaded not guilty to causing less than Lm50 damage at the hospital and breaching the peace.
Charles and Louis Vella were also charged with keeping and carrying a knuckleduster without a licence while Louis Vella and the boy were charged with the possession of a cutting instrument without a licence.
The boy was also charged with assaulting and slightly injuring PC James Cardona while Charles Vella was charged with breaching the conditions of a previous release.
The Vellas were remanded in custody while the boy was granted bail against a personal guarantee of Lm500.
Police Inspectors Mario Bonello and Alexander Paul Miruzzi prosecuted.
Dr José Herrera, Dr Joseph Giglio and Dr Edward Gatt appeared for the Vellas and the boy while Dr Joanne Vella Cuschieri appeared in parte civile.
