I read Professor Richard England's two-part interview with tenor Joseph Calleja (The Sunday Times, September 25, October 2) and I was amazed how our one of our greatest tenors, Oreste Kirkop, was not mentioned.

Although Kirkop had a short career, he was one of the best I've heard among the seven tenors mentioned. Another great tenor, who was not picked, is Alfredo Kraus who sang all over the world and sat, for many years, on a panel to select young singers.

I was flabbergasted by Calleja's criticism of Beniamino Gigli who, with his unique voice, made people cry wherever he performed.
