Broadcasting Authority survey shows website favoured by all ages and genders

Times of Malta remains the top news portal on the island, with 55.4% of people naming it as their preferred choice source of online news.

According to the latest Broadcasting Authority survey, Times of Malta is the most preferred local news site for local news across all age groups and genders. 

MaltaToday ranked in second place with 5.2% with Lovin Malta a close third at 4.8%. One-fourth of those questioned said they do not have a preferred news website.

The BA survey was carried out between September 14 and 20, 2025, based on 2,100 interviews with Maltese residents aged 12 and over. It delves into audience preferences for TV, online and radio sources of information.  

Television continues to dominate audience numbers, with 85 per cent of residents saying they watch TV. 

When it comes to sourcing news, 42.3% said they get their news from TV. Online news portals followed at 27.6%, with Facebook cited as the third most favoured news source at 16.7%.

Times of Malta also features in the top three most preferred online programmes, with Times Talk hosted by assistant editor Mark Laurence Zammit, named by 15.8% of respondents.

Jon Mallia's podcast was named as the most preferred online programme platform by 17.2% of people, followed by Ricky Caruana's podcasts at 16%.

Most people said they watch online Maltese programmes/audiovisual content on Facebook (89%). Youtube (77.6%), Instagram (49%) and Timesofmalta.com (40%) also rank highly for video content.

TV news

State broadcaster TVM was named as the preferred source of local news by 40% of people. The Nationalist Party’s NET TV is the second most preferred local TV station for watching local news, followed by Labour’s ONE TV at 27.2%.

A total of 87% of Maltese residents are television viewers, while 70% are radio listeners.

Just over two in three Maltese residents (around 70%) listen to radio, but very few now use radio as their primary source of local news.
