Times of Malta subscribers invited to screening of ‘Żejtune’

The screening was followed by a discussion with the film's director

Times of Malta subscribers were invited to attend an intimate screening of Żejtune at the Spazju Kreattiv cinema, in Valletta, on April 28.

Directed by Alex Camilleri and set in contemporary Malta, the film presents the story of Mar (Michela Farrugia), a young woman preparing to leave the island behind after inheriting three parcels of land following her estranged mother’s death.

Along the way, she meets and makes friends with an elderly għana singer, Nenu (Nenu Borg), who helps her find the land in question while drawing her into Malta’s traditions and cultural roots.

The screening was followed by a discussion between Times of Malta editor-in-chief Herman Grech and Camilleri.

The director shared his own experience of moving from New York to Malta a few years ago and touched on some of the film’s themes such as identity, belonging and community, and Malta’s changing urban landscape, among others. He also answered questions from the audience.

Afterwards, the Times of Malta subscribers were treated to refreshments.

The screening was organised by Times Events in collaboration with Arts Council Malta.
