The top stories in Malta's newspapers
The following are the top stories in Malta's newspapers on Thursday.
Times of Malta leads with news that the winter flu season has begun earlier than usual, with doctors facing increased pressure from growing numbers of patients presenting with symptoms or requesting home visits.
The newspaper also reports on Prime Minister Robert Abela saying yesterday he sees no reason to dismiss Housing Minister Roderick Galdes after information the minister handed him about his property dealings did not raise doubts about his source of funds.
The Malta Independent also reports on Abela ruling out action against Galdes, with the PM saying a request for an inquiry into the housing minister is based on “speculation, conjectures”.
Keeping with the story, the newspaper also reports on Galdes rejecting assertions that his property dealings conflict with his portfolio for affordable housing.
In-Nazzjon also gives prominence to the housing minister, with the paper reporting that Galdes rejected a request from the outlet to publish documents providing information about his sources of wealth.
It also reports on Labour MEPs Thomas Bajada and Daniel Attard abstaining from a vote yesterday, calling on the EU to set up a cross-border abortion fund, and recent Eurostat figures putting Malta’s inflation rate above the EU and Eurozone.
L-orizzont leads with the inauguration of the new Msida Creek flyover, which became operational at midnight, noting the project cost €35 million.
The paper also reports on the government allocating €250,000 for leukaemia patient Sandro Grech to receive specialist treatment in Singapore, and a project it says will strengthen the role of workers’ organisations.
