Watch: Ian Borg live on Il-Każin

Mark Laurence Zammit questions the Foreign Affairs Minister on Malta's role in a world increasingly at war

Ian Borg discussed Malta's role in the wider world in a live debate hosted by Mark Laurence Zammit on Il-Każin.

Malta's Foreign Affairs Minister faced questions from both Zammit and audience members.

The debate can be seen below.

Borg is leading Malta’s foreign policy at a tricky time.

Russia and Ukraine are at war and the US and Israel are bombing Iran, with the latter retaliating by targeting neighbouring countries and restricting access through the Strait of Hormuz, sending oil prices upward.

Those events – and shock developments like the explosion of a sanctioned Russian tanker just outside Malta’s search and rescue zone – raise questions about Malta’s role in this shifting landscape.

What must Malta do to ensure national security? What does neutrality mean in this new geopolitical reality? How will economic impacts – on inflation, public spending or GDP growth – condition our foreign policy?

Il-Każin is a live debate show held once a month in front of a live audience. Following a collaboration deal with Times of Malta, award-winning journalists Jon Mallia and Mark Laurence Zammit will alternate as hosts.
