The top 10 films in Malta in 2025, according to the box office

Superhero films on the decline, but remakes, sequels and spin-offs feature heavily.

The Lilo & Stitch live-action film was the top-grossing film in Malta in 2025, with pictures aimed at younger audiences dominating this year’s top 10 chart. 

Lilo & Stitch, a remake of the hit 2002 animated Disney film about a lonely Hawaiian girl who befriends a mischievous alien, is one of two live-action remakes in the top 10, with How to Train Your Dragon coming in at number eight. 

A Minecraft Movie, based on the hugely popular building and exploration video game, took the number two spot, with the top three rounded off by The Conjuring: Last Rites, the ninth instalment in the long-running horror franchise. 

Alex Pace, director at film distributor KRS Releases Ltd, said it was unusual for a horror film to rank so highly.  

“On the other hand, there are fewer top-ranking superhero films this year. I think the market has been oversaturated in recent years and people are a bit tired of them,” he said.

The two superhero films in the top 10, Superman and Fantastic 4: First Steps, underperformed both locally and internationally, he observed. 

Pace also noted a lack of original stories. The only film in the top 10 that is not a sequel, spin-off or remake is Formula 1, a sports drama starring Brad Pitt as a driver who returns to his old team to lead them to victory, a storyline that is itself a well-trodden trope.  

He also complained about the negative impact of illegal streaming services such as IPTV. According to a report published earlier this year by the Malta Communications Authority, IPTV connections increased by 10.4 per cent compared to 2024. 

“Legal streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime also have an impact, but the difference is that films often appear on IPTV before their cinematic release in Malta,” he said. 

Pace said that the recently released Avatar: Fire and Ash would likely break into the top by the year’s end, based on the success of the previous two films in the franchise.
