A British tourist died in the early hours of Friday after falling off the balcony of his hotel in St Julian's.
Police said preliminary investigations indicated that the 25-year-old man fell off the balcony of the hotel on Triq Spinola at around 4.15am.
A medical team was called but the man was pronounced dead on the scene.
Magistrate Philip Galea Farrugia is leading the inquiry, assisted by several experts as police investigations continue.
Times of Malta has confirmed that the fatal incident happened at the Cavalieri Art Hotel and that the man fell off a balcony facing Triq Spinola, though no other details were available at the time of publication.
The police told Times of Malta that the road was temporarily closed for traffic earlier on Friday morning but once the body was taken away, the road was reopened.
By 9am on Friday morning, the hotel appeared to be operating as usual with nothing to suggest the tragic events of the night before.
Welsh news outlet Newyddion S4C reported Friday afternoon that the deceased tourist was a Welsh man from Gwynedd.
