A 63-year-old German tourist died yesterday after getting into difficulties at Ramla Bay, in Gozo, the police said.
There was a strong north-westerly wind yesterday causing fairly high waves at the bay and it is thought that drowning was the cause of Renate Weiss' death.
She was swimming with her husband when the accident happened at about 11.30 a.m. Other bathers tried to save her by administering mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and calling the Civil Protection Department but their efforts were in vain.
Ms Weiss had only arrived in Gozo on Thursday.
Duty Magistrate Paul Coppini was informed and appointed a number of experts to help with the inquiry. The post-mortem is expected to be carried out today.
The last confirmed drowning took place last February, when a 16-month old girl died in her family's pool after wandering off on her own.
