It is illegal to have tow bars protruding beyond the bumper. A tow bar beneath the bumper has to be registered and the fixture recorded in the vehicle's logbook against a one-time fee of Lm2.50.
Recently I made a count of vehicles with tow bars parked in a Sliema street. Believe it or not, slightly less than a quarter had one - one car even had two, in front and rear, just to make sure.
I am sure the majority are not registered. I wonder how the ever-watchful traffic wardens have so far overlooked such a ready source of revenue.
In genuine cases of tow bars needing to protrude from the bumper, a proper licence should be affixed to the windscreen when a trailer is attached. Naturally, the licence should carry an annual fee.
