Blood samples from the 26-year-old woman who was found dead by her father on Monday are being tested for illicit substances in order to establish whether she died of an overdose.

Although an autopsy yesterday revealed that Kelly Micallef had died of pulmonary oedema - the accumulation of fluid in the lungs - sources said toxicology tests will determine whether that happened as a result of drugs consumed.

Pulmonary oedema is a common symptom of a drug overdose. It is normally the cause of the pink frothy substance at the person's mouth during such incidents.

Ms Micallef was found lying on her bed two days ago in Is-Sebuqa Street, San Ġwann.

Sources said drug-related material was found close to her, sparking off the theory she had died of an overdose.

Four years ago, Ms Micallef was questioned by the police after they found her in a house after a tense six-hour standoff in Mill Street, Qormi. The dramatic evening unfolded when a man allegedly fired shots at the door of his mother's house before returning to his, a stone's throw away.
