The humid heat, which characterises Maltese summers, may not provide the ideal environment for training or practising an indoor sport. Yet, badminton activity has continued without stopping during the holiday period.

Most of the clubs maintained their regular weekly sessions and the Badminton Association itself organised three separate friendly activities at the Cottonera Sports Complex.

Prominent among the off-season activities was a training course for prospective junior players.

The sessions were run by Jo'Anne Cassar, a qualified and experienced badminton coach who has always shown a marked talent for training youngsters.

Spread over 12 weekly sessions, the course focused on a group of youngsters, aged between four and 11 years. Each 90-minute session centred around specific exercises intended to improve each child's physical development and co-ordination. The beginners were also taught basic footwork skills and playing technique.

No session would be complete without a fun game of some sort. This indirectly served to introduce the participants to the basic badminton rules of the game.

Similar courses will be organised during the coming months as well. Interested parents who want to enrol their children may contact the Badminton Association directly on 21-697407 or 21-312697.
