Transport Malta says reorganisation of Għadira moorings means greater safety

The area for mooring buoys and for anchorage had been increased but there is a wider buffer from swimmers

Transport Malta said on Sunday that the reorganisation of moorings in Għadira Bay was ensuring greater safety for everyone. It also reiterated that there are no plans for a yacht marina.

The regulator was reacting to claims made by the Momentum political party and the mayor of Mellieha.

Momentum on Saturday urged Transport Malta to be more open and communicative, saying it was concerned by ongoing works to install permanent moorings across “nearly half” the popular swimming spot in Mellieħa.

On Sunday, Transport Malta said the reorganisation of moorings in Għadira Bay was completed in June.

40m fairways had been mapped out and could be seen digitally by anyone, it said.

Those who had mooring buoys had been assigned a location according to the size of their craft.

The area for mooring buoys and for anchorage had been increased and the buffer zone between the bathing area and the boats was now 20m wider, to ensure greater safety for all.

Watersport operators had been consulted and registered to avoid problems of the past.

The agency did not say by how much the number of moorings had been increased, or by how much the mooring and anchorage area had been extended. It said it regretted the comments by Momentum, which seemed to advocate a return to the situation of the past despite the many problems that had existed.

It said the recent reorganisation appeared to be working well for everybody.

Transport Malta in a previous Facebook post also denied that there were any plans for pontoons to be laid in Ghadira Bay.
