Medium- to long-term targets in a number of areas related to transport are being established and these include health targets, such as reducing road traffic injury accidents in Malta by 50 per cent over the next 10 years, Communications and Transport Minister Censu Galea said.

"This is not an easy task, but through policies and measures aimed at improving road safety and through encouraging sustainable and accessible transport development, I am sure we will manage," he said.

The ministry was also committed to bring about a modal shift from the private car to public transport.

"We are aiming to achieve this in various ways, starting from changing the existing public transport fleet as well as to implementing other policies, such as the park and ride scheme in our capital and World Heritage City, Valletta, as well as controlled parking schemes," Mr Galea said.

He was addressing the second high-level meeting on transport, environment and health organised by the World Health Organisation in Geneva, yesterday.
