Steve Trew, a former British triathlon coach and commentator for the BBC at the Athens Olympics last summer, will be conducting another training camp for Maltese triathletes next April, the Malta Triathlon Association (MTA) said in a statement.

This will be the second training camp held by Trew, the national coach who has been a frequent visitor to our shores as an athlete, coach and tourist.

Spread over 10 days, the camp is expected to be a very intensive one with particular emphasis laid on both the theory and practice of the modern sports of triathlon.

In the meantime, Maltese triathlon once again featured prominently at the recent Sportivi Nazzjonali awards as local champion Maria Mifsud Bonnici placed second behind swimmer Angela Galea.

Mifsud Bonnici, who was named Sportswoman of the Year two years ago, enjoyed a successful 2004, finishing runner-up in the Triathlon Championships of the Small States of Europe and winning all the local races she took part in.

Cross Country Duathlon next month

With the proclaimed intention of attracting new blood to triathlon, the Malta Triathlon Association will organise a Cross Country Duathlon on March 5 at Mizieb, limits of Xemxija, starting at 1.30 p.m.

It is hoped that this event, which is primarily a fun adventure comprising running and mountain-biking, will raise funds for the association which is in dire need of cash to implement its packed schedule of races this year.

More information on the MTA activities can be found on www.maltatriathlon.org.
