Trezeguet strikes twice as Juve crush Empoli
Udinese, Livorno on maximum spoils
France forward David Trezeguet scored twice to help Italian champions Juventus romp to a 4-0 win at Empoli in Serie A yesterday and maintain a 100 per cent start to the season.
Juve were 3-0 up within 16 minutes thanks to Trezeguet's opener, compatriot Patrick Vieira's first goal for the club and a deflected strike from Mauro Camoranesi.
Trezeguet completed the rout after the break with a lob as Fabio Capello's side picked up their second straight win of the campaign.
Udinese, who will make their Champions League debut on Wednesday, also have two wins from two after a 1-0 victory at Roma, as do Livorno who won 1-0 at Treviso thanks to an injury-time goal from Cristiano Lucarelli.
On Saturday, Inter fell to a 3-2 defeat at Palermo and Milan beat Siena 3-1.
It was a blistering opening from Juventus who went ahead when Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic produced a delightful touch to put Trezeguet in on goal in the 10th minute and the Frenchman confidently drove home.
Four minutes later, Vieira claimed his first goal following his move from Arsenal with a fine glancing header from a Pavel Nedved corner.
The game was all over in the 16th minute when Argentine-born Camoranesi picked the ball up deep and his speculative shot took a big deflection off Empoli defender Andrea Coda and looped into the net.
Trezeguet made it 4-0 with his second goal in the 59th minute, racing on to a through ball from Nedved and lobbing Empoli keeper Gianluca Berti who had rushed off his line.
Berti did better to foil at close range Trezeguet's hopes of a hat-trick but Juve coach Fabio Capello took advantage of the scoreline to give both the Frenchman and Ibrahimovic a rest in the final stages.
At the Olympic stadium, Roma's Vincenzo Montella wasted two good chances to put his side ahead before Udinese's Ghanaian midfielder Sulley Ali Muntari put the visitors ahead with a deflected strike in the 32nd minute.
Antonio Cassano, who is expected to finally resolve his contractual problems with Roma today, came on as a second half substitute but Udinese had several chances to add a second finding little resistance to their counter-attacks.
The victory was particularly sweet for Udinese given that they ruined the home debut of their former coach Luciano Spalletti who left Udine for the capital at the end of last season.
Electric start
New-look Fiorentina made an electric start at Messina with in-form Luca Toni, fresh from his midweek hat-trick for Italy in Belarus, opening the scoring with a fine individual goal from a tight angle.
Toni's strike partner, Bulgarian Valeri Bojinov made it 2-0 four minutes before the break with a great turn and shot from inside the area.
But Messina fought back well after the break with Arturo Di Napoli heading them back into the game and then Fiorentina's defence was in disarray when they left Ivory Coast full back Marc Zoro free to equalise in the 61st minute.
Lazio came back for a 1-1 draw at Cagliari, Sebastiano Siviglia's header cancelling out the opener from Cagliari's Honduran striker David Suazo.
Sampdoria beat Reggina 3-2 and Parma fell to a 1-0 defeat at Chievo.
