Some of Malta's finest musicians convened at BJs Nightclub in Paceville to pay tribute to Elvin Jones, the legendary jazz drummer who died on May 18.

Among them were Sammy Murgo, Walter Vella, Paul Giordmaina and Dominic Abela.

The American drummer was for long considered as being in a league of his own. A member of the John Coltrane Quartet, Jones's powerful, complex playing helped change the role of the drummer in jazz groups and influenced a generation of rockers, including The Doors.

Jones, who died at the age of 76, had taken part in the very first Malta Jazz Festival in 1991.
