Truck carrying gravel overturns near Lija roundabout

Accident happened next to a usually crowded vegetable vendor

Motorists reported heavy traffic around the Lija roundabout early on Wednesday after a 16-wheel articulated truck overturned and landed on its side on Naxxar Road.

Police told Times of Malta no injuries were reported.

The accident happened at around 5.30am right next to a usually crowded vegetable vendor.

The DAF truck, which was carrying gravel, was turning from the Birkirkara bypass onto Naxxar Road opposite the Bathroom Design showroom.

Diesel and oil were spilt into the street, and at around 7.45am, workers were removing the gravel before attempting to lift the truck.

Civil Protection Department officers assisted on-site.

Facebook page Maltese Roads Traffic Updates urged drivers to avoid the roundabout connecting Birkirkara with Lija and Mosta because of a long tailback in the area.
