Replace Iran with Italy at 2026 World Cup, Trump's special envoy urges FIFA
Italy missed out on World Cup qualification for a third successive time last month
A senior envoy of US President Donald Trump has reportedly urged FIFA to replace Iran with Italy in the tournament, despite Iran having already qualified and Italy crashing out in the play-offs.
Trump’s special envoy, Paolo Zampolli, is said to have presented the idea to FIFA and its president, Gianni Infantino, according to The Financial Times.
The proposal suggests Italy should take Iran’s place at the 2026 World Cup, which the United States, Canada and Mexico will co-host.
Zampolli reportedly argued that Italy, a four-time World Cup winner, has the credentials to merit inclusion despite failing to qualify during the qualification rounds.
“I confirm I have suggested to Trump and Infantino that Italy replace Iran at the World Cup. I’m an Italian native, and it would be a dream to see the Azzurri at a US-hosted tournament. With four titles, they have the pedigree to justify inclusion,” Zampolli said.
