`Truth` on the EU on far right

Mr Edward Spalton (The Sunday Times, April 28) must have played the same record so many times in The Sunday Times over the past couple of years that it is surely cracked by now.

His compatriots, he tells us, were duped into taking the country into the EU by dishonest politicians in the past. Now that they know the truth about it, one would assume, they would be more than eager to take it out! But, lo and behold, the British didn`t rush in their droves to vote for the UKIP in the last general elections. The Conservatives conducted their campaign on far less radical lines, the single currency, and we know what happened to them.

So Mr Spalton now tells us that the main British parliamentary parties, Labour, Conservative, and Liberal Democrats, all of whom support the EU, are an unholy trinity who have sold the national interest down the drain.

I suppose that the only parties that are telling the truth about the EU to the people of Britain are the UKIP (which, according to an Observer report of some months ago is heavily infiltrated by the National Front) and the BNP, the far right, fascist, British National Party.

I suppose that were Mr Spalding French he would have voted for Le Pen at the recent French Presidential elections. After all, Le Pen, like the UKIP and the BNP, wants to take France out of the EU. Funny how the French managed to come together as a nation when it counted and threw him out.

Come to think of it, by some odd coincidence the parties in Europe who are anti-EU do tend to be fascists or Nazis or on the far right at any rate. Strange, isn`t it? These are the fellow travellers with national independence parties like the UKIP and the local CNI.

Strange again that the latter is largely composed of old Socialists when no self-respecting socialist or social democrat in Europe would touch their local Eurosceptics with a bargepole. But now we have it in black and white. Another section of the press (Malta Today, May 5) reported that one of the CNI`s leading activists and MLP candidate, Sharon Ellul Bonici, has landed a lucrative job in Brussels thanks to her association with "the EDD, a rightist, Eurosceptic group characterised by a small but vociferous association of fundamentalist hunters, nationalists, and right-wing spokesmen".

These, I suppose, are the people who tell the truth about Europe not the democratically elected parliaments of their countries on which Mr Spalding heaps such scorn. At any rate, we now know, if we needed further proof, who the CNI`s allies are.
