Net Television presenter Clare Agius is using her programme Siesta to launch a scheme encouraging the public to assist voluntary environmental work undertaken by the Biological Conservation Research Foundation (Bicref).
Through the scheme, the public is encouraged to purchase the Siesta blue dolphin, which is being made available at various stationery shops.
Bicref, which has been working in the area of conservation research and environmental education for years, felt that a lot still needed to be done in this regard.
It has promoted education on the vulnerability and needs of the environment through projects such as award winning eco-tourism environmental documentaries, radio and television interviews, nature photographic exhibitions and talks.
It also organised terrestrial and marine ongoing monitoring work in conservation areas, such as Ghajn Tuffieha and Ramla and other potential marine conservation areas, awareness campaigns on various issues, including the increasing tuna penning industry, and the need for marine conservation areas.
Bicref assisted ongoing scientific research in conservation projects such as the cetacean and turtle research project initiated and run by marine biologist Adriana Vella.
