About 20 people have gone missing in mountains in northern Japan and fears are growing they may have been involved in an accident, Kyodo news agency reported.

The group had gone climbing yesterday from a hot-spring resort in Akita prefecture but had not returned by nightfall, Kyodo quoted police as saying.

The region, known for its ski resorts and hot springs, was hit by a snow storm after the climbers left the resort in the town of Tazawako, about 450 km northwest of Tokyo.
