Two admit using fake passports

Arrests were made at the airport on Sunday

Two men have been jailed for six months each after pleading guilty to using a fake passport.

25-year-old Klaudjo Gjini and Mustafa Sadikaj, 22, were arraigned before Magistrate Kevan Azzopardi on Monday afternoon.

Police inspector Christian Abela told the court that the two Albanian nationals were arrested at the airport on Sunday after they were found to be using fake passports. One had an Israeli passport and the other a Norwegian one.

During submissions on punishment, Abela requested effective imprisonment for both men since this was an offence against the country’s national security. He added that the men cooperated with the police and admitted at an early stage.

Legal aid lawyer Martin Farrugia said that the charges made no mention of national security. He added that the two accused are still young but immature and this was their first brush with the law.

The court found them guilty by their own their admission and jailed them for six months each.

Magistrate Kevan Azzopardi presided. Police inspector Christian Abela prosecuted while legal aid lawyer Martin Farrugia assisted the accused.
